When to call a Fractional CTO

When technology becomes too important to manage reactively.

You may not need a full-time CTO, but some decisions are too important to make without senior technical leadership.

01

Major technology decision

A big platform, software or AI investment is coming, and you want an independent view first.

02

Systems holding you back

Spreadsheets, workarounds and disconnected platforms are getting harder to manage as you grow.

03

A project going off track

Deadlines slip, budgets grow and nobody can say what is actually wrong.

04

Automation or AI needs direction

You see the opportunity but not what to automate, what to leave alone, or where the value is.

05

The CEO is the unofficial CTO

Vendor, developer and systems questions keep landing on the founder.

06

Many vendors, no owner

Each vendor owns a piece, but nobody owns the overall direction.

Sound familiar? Let's spend 30 minutes on it.

Your technology right hand

From the operations floor to the executive table.

I have spent more than twenty years progressing from hands-on infrastructure and network operations to Chief Technology Officer—building the breadth to test both the strategy and the engineering beneath it.

My experience includes enterprise AWS architecture, cloud migration, platform reliability, DevSecOps, data engineering, AI governance, vendor evaluation and leading cross-functional engineering teams. I currently lead technology strategy and AI governance in a regulated financial-services environment.

“My role is not to make technology sound impressive. It is to make the decision clear, defensible and useful to the business.”
  • CTO and Executive Committee technology leadership
  • AWS systems supporting 35M+ monthly active users
  • Led and mentored an 18-person engineering function
  • CEH Master · AWS Cloud Practitioner · Azure Fundamentals

A specialist diagnostic

AI is only as trustworthy as the foundation beneath it.

For data, reporting and AI readiness, I use a four-layer model assessed across three lenses: People, Process and Platform. It reveals where confidence breaks—and where investment will actually move the business forward.

PeopleProcessPlatform
01

Casing

Where information arrives, who owns it and whether the foundation is controlled.

02

Bronze

How raw information becomes consistent, structured and usable.

03

Silver

How rules, transformations and automation become repeatable and auditable.

04

Gold

Where reporting, decisions and AI create trustworthy business value.

Evidence, not theatre

Broad enough for the whole decision. Technical enough to test the detail.

The value of a Fractional CTO is range: knowing where strategy, delivery, risk and people collide before the organisation pays for the collision.

Strategy

Technology roadmaps, operating models, investment sequencing and executive communication.

Governance

AI use-case registers, vendor evaluation, POPIA-aware adoption and defensible controls.

Architecture

AWS, hybrid-cloud modernisation, data platforms, integration and infrastructure as code.

Leadership

Engineering team direction, accountability, mentoring and cross-functional alignment.

Reliability

DevSecOps, SRE, security remediation, operational automation and scalable platforms.

Commercial clarity

Scope challenge, partner selection, delivery oversight and translating trade-offs into decisions.

A low-risk first step

Clarity begins with one direct conversation.

  1. 01

    Tell me the decision

Thirty minutes, confidential and without preparation. We establish what is at stake and whether I can add value.

  2. 02

    Choose the right depth

A Strategic Technology Review, ongoing Fractional CTO leadership or oversight of a critical initiative—never more engagement than the problem needs.

  3. 03

    Leave with a position

A clear recommendation, documented reasoning and practical next actions your leaders and technical teams can use.

Questions worth asking

Before we speak.

We already have an IT manager, CTO or delivery partner.+

Good. This is not replacement capacity. I can support the leader you have, challenge a partner constructively, or provide an independent view when the stakes justify it.

Are we too small for a Fractional CTO?+

If technology materially affects revenue, risk, operations or customer trust, the decisions already exist. Fractional means buying the right level of judgement only when it is useful.

Will you also sell us the implementation?+

Not as the default. Separating advice from a large delivery contract protects the independence of the recommendation. I can guide your team, help select a partner and govern delivery.

Can the conversation remain confidential?+

Yes. Sensitive vendor, team, security and investment discussions are treated as confidential from the first conversation. Formal terms can be put in place before detailed information is shared.

Do you only work with data and AI?+

No. My experience spans cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, DevSecOps, security, technical operations, team leadership, data and AI. The four-layer model is one specialist diagnostic, not the boundary of the practice.
